FUE takes healthy follicles from the back and sides of the scalp — the zone that androgenetic hair loss does not reach — one follicular unit at a time, using a punch of 0.8 to 1.0mm. Nothing is cut and nothing is stitched. Each extraction leaves a dot under a millimetre across, and a short growth of surrounding hair covers it. Because every graft is taken individually, the result depends almost entirely on the hand doing the extraction and the speed at which the follicles reach the recipient site.

Will the back of my head be visibly scarred?

Not in the way a strip operation scars it. FUE leaves one dot under a millimetre wide per extraction, scattered rather than joined into a line. The number of dots rises with the number of grafts, but growing the surrounding hair even slightly covers them. Hair does not regrow from an extraction point itself; the follicles deliberately left behind carry the density of the donor area afterwards.

How painful is it, honestly?

On a scale where nothing is 0 and unbearable is 10, patients generally place the strip method at 4 to 5 and FUE at 1 to 2. Local anaesthesia is standard and sedation is available. Pain after the operation is mild enough that most people return to ordinary activity the following day.

How many grafts do I actually need?

That is set by the area to be covered and the density you want inside it, not by a number chosen in advance. Dense packing means 40 to 50 follicular units per square centimetre — 80 to 100 hairs — which approaches native density. A receding temple corner and a bald crown are very different areas, so the graft count is decided at the consultation against your own scalp.

When will it look like my own hair?

Transplanted hair sheds within the first month; that is expected and not a failure. Regrowth becomes visible around the fourth month, roughly eighty per cent of the final result is readable at eight months, and the outcome is judged at one year.
