Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

Pigment placed just under the epidermis to close the colour gap between scalp and hair.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Kim Dae-woo, Medical Director, MONARA Dermatology Clinic

Scalp micropigmentation puts pigment into the skin at the depth of a very short hair, reducing the contrast between a pale scalp and darker hair so that the scalp stops showing through. It is a medical procedure with a medical purpose: it solves what a transplant cannot — visible skin between existing hairs, a widening parting, a whorl that shows, a strip scar, or a head that is kept shaved by choice.

Suitability is assessed at consultation by Dr. Kim Dae-woo, who performs the treatment himself. Where a combination gives a better result than one approach alone, that is what is recommended — and where a treatment is not warranted, that is said plainly.

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) FAQ

Who is this actually for?
People whose scalp shows through thinning hair, whose parting has widened, who want to stop using hair fibre powder, who have a scar to camouflage, whose crown loss is too advanced for surgery, or who keep their head shaved and want a defined line.
Will it look like a tattoo?
Not if it is done in hair-width points. Larger or deeper pigment placement is what produces a flat, obviously tattooed look.
Does it damage the hair I still have?
No. The pigment is placed in the skin between hairs, above the depth at which follicles sit.
Can it be combined with a transplant?
Frequently, and deliberately. Micropigmentation behind a transplanted area reduces scalp-to-hair contrast and makes the same graft count read as denser.
